78th Annual AAPOR Conference

Working Together: The Essential Role of Public Opinion Research in Collaborative Science

May 9 - 12, 2023

Call for Papers, Methodological Briefs, Posters, Panels, and Roundtables

Submission Deadline: Monday, November 14, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. ET

The American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) is thrilled to announce that its 79th Annual Conference will be held at the Hiton Atlanta on Wednesday, May 15 through Friday, May 17, 2024. Don't miss this opportunity to participate in the premier forum for the exchange of advances in public opinion and survey research.

Over the past several years, AAPOR has celebrated coming together, been challenged with disrupting public opinion research in the pursuit of equity and inclusion, and focused on building collaborative partnerships and working together. In 2024, we will build on these themes to focus on impacting communities through the engaged scholarship work done by public opinion and survey research methods scholars and practitioners.

Public opinion and survey research impacts our communities in a variety of important ways. For example, this research plays an important role in democracy and governance by measuring the opinions and concerns of all members of communities. It is also a key source of information for developing and evaluating policies at all levels of government in multiple domains, including health, the environment, transportation, finance, disaster preparedness, social services, justice, and others. Finally, survey and public opinion research provides important data about disparities and inequity that can be used to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion. For the 2024 conference theme, we will be spotlighting the many ways that public opinion and survey research is having an impact on communities.

To this end, AAPOR members will be encouraged to submit abstracts that feature all the ways that surveys and public opinion research impact communities. Abstracts should include a (brief) description of the impact of the work in addition to relevant information about the research.

We look forward to this opportunity to learn about how the important work being done by AAPOR members impacts communities and celebrate the role of engaged scholarship.

Submissions: The proposal submission form is unique to each submission type but generally requests author contact information, title, presentation track, keywords describing the content of the presentation, and an abstract of no more than 300 words. To promote broad conference participation, an individual may not submit more than three proposals as first author, regardless of the proposed format of the submission. For specific descriptions and requirements for each proposal type, as well as to submit your proposal, please use the expandable sections below.

All abstracts should be submitted electronically by Monday, November 14, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Building on last year's submission procedures, we will continue to have collaborative versions of each type of proposal. Collaborative proposals are those that involve at least TWO presenters who will be present at AAPOR, one who is an AAPOR member and one who comes from outside of the usual AAPOR stakeholders (e.g., a client or substantive expert outside of fields related to public opinion or survey research). If you indicate that your proposal is collaborative, you will be asked to provide an explanation of why it is a collaborative proposal.

Space on the program is limited. There will be some individual submissions that cannot be integrated into a session and will, unfortunately, not be accepted. Authors of individual papers have a greater chance of acceptance if they are also willing to be considered for a methodological brief or poster.

Additional details and instructions for submitting an abstract for the 2024 AAPOR Conference can be found on the AAPOR website.

Inquiries: Questions concerning the AAPOR conference or the proposal submission process should be directed to AAPOR Executive Director, Tristanne Staudt, tstaudt@aapor.org.

Steps and Instructions:

  1. Affinity Group Sessions

Affinity Group Sessions are organized sessions that focus on a common theme and include 4-5 participants in addition to the session organizer. The organizer of the session should enter up to a 300-word abstract into the system discussing the issues to be addressed and their importance. New in 2024 – rather than listing abstracts for each speaker, Affinity Group Sessions will only require a single abstract to cover the overall topic of the session.
  2. Methodological Briefs

Methodological Briefs are intentionally short (8-10 minutes) oral presentations of original methodological research that highlight significant empirical results (e.g., one table) with less theoretical elaboration than a full paper. A 300-word abstract is required at submission. Authors are strongly encouraged to distribute a short paper on request (e.g., 5-8 pages in length). In addition, authors will be asked to make their presentation materials such as PowerPoint slides, available to session attendees prior to or at the conference, and will be asked to submit a video recording of their presentation to become part of the AAPOR 78th Library.
  3. Panels

Contributed Panel Sessions are organized sessions that focus on a common theme and include 4-5 participants in addition to the panel organizer. The organizer of the panel should enter up to a 300-word abstract into the system discussing the issues to be addressed and their importance. In addition, the panel organizer should collect the submission details for each of the presented abstracts in the session. The organizer will enter these details into the submission on behalf of the presenting authors.

An abstract is required for each presented submission in the panel.
  4. Papers

Papers involve original research featuring an oral address of 12-15 minutes. Papers with presenting collaborators will have up to 20 minutes for their presentations. A 300-word abstract is required at submission. Authors are strongly encouraged to prepare a formal paper in advance of the conference (usually 12-15 pages in length) to distribute on request. In addition, authors will ask to make their presentation materials, such as PowerPoint slides, available to session attendees prior to or at the conference, and will be asked to submit a video recording of their presentation to become part of the 78th Annual AAPOR Conference 78th Annual AAPOR Conference.
  5. Posters

Posters are presentations of original research that relay on visual display (i.e., posters). A 300-word abstract is required for submission. In addition, authors will be asked to make their poster materials available to session attendees prior to or at the conference.
  6. Roundtables

Roundtables encourage live facilitation conversations among AAPOR members about professional development and current issues facing our field (such as being a peer reviewer, interacting with the media, leadership issues, diversity and inclusion training, presenting oneself professionally, etc.) The proposal should identify the leaders of the round table as well as identify discussion topics and questions, and the need for such a discussion.
  7. General Instructions

No names or titles should be included in the abstract text. Names will be automatically hidden during the abstract review process and will be automatically inserted and properly formatted upon publication.

Presenting authors will be automatically informed of the unique ID numbers and passwords assigned to their abstracts. Abstracts may be viewed and modified at any time between submission and the deadline, using the assigned ID# and password.
